DEVELOPMENT OF WORLD URANIUM INDUSTRY – KEY CHALLENGES

By 2040, an 80 % increase in the uranium demand for in the world’s nuclear industry is projected. The gap between specified sources of uranium supply and requirements may amount to about 55 thousand tons of uranium. Low uranium prices are holding back geological exploration and development of new deposits. The world’s low-cost uranium resources are insufficient to meet long-term growth rates of uranium production which will satisfy global nuclear power industry demand.

Keywords: uranium, demand, supply, resources, mining, production, discoveries.

THE CURRENT STATE OF THE WORLD AND RUSSIAN URANIUM INDUSTRY

The analysis of the state of the uranium industry in connection with the global economic crisis and the pandemic that affected the development of nuclear energy is given. Special attention is paid to the state of nuclear energy in Russia. An attempt is being made to determine the directions in solving the problem of its provision with uranium by involving reserve deposits in production and reducing the overall needs for uranium.

FEATURES OF THE URANIUM POTENTIALITY OF SEDIMENTARY ROCKS AND FLUIDS OF THE PRIPYAT TROUGH

The article considers the geological structure of the Pripyat trough, in the devonian deposits of which pre-salt, inter-salt and post-salt complexes of sedimentary rocks are distinguished. Their radioactivity was analyzed. It has been established that the distribution of uranium and radium in the oil deposits localized in them and near-edge formation waters are characterized by a significant shift of the radioactive balance towards radium both in near-contour formation waters and in oil deposits. The regulator of such movement is the volumetric concentration of radium in the places where the element passes from the rock to the aqueous phase.

Keywords: Pripyat trough, uranium, groundwater, radiogeochemistry.

THORIUM RUSSIA: GEOLOGY, RESOURCES, PROSPECTS

Information is given on the possibility of using thorium in domestic nuclear power industry that makes the problem of identifying and studying thorium deposits urgent. Features of thorium geochemistry and mineralogy, the genesis and formation epochs of thorium-oriented geological rock associations, as well as the petrological composition and geology of a number of important thorium-bearing targets with complex ores are discussed. Their classification based on studying ore formations of the domestic metallogenic school and the IAEA is proposed. Examples of ore deposits of major geological and economic types are given. Lines for further studies are recommended.

POTENTIAL OF GOLD-URANIUM MINING OF THE BALTIC SHIELD AND PROSPECTS FOR ITS IMPLEMENTATION

Information on the main types of structures that act as ore-bearing ones for the gold-uranium mineralization of the Baltic Shield, namely: rift belts, superimposed depressions, and zones of tectonic-magmatic activation have been provided. The characteristic of the most promising structures of each type has been given. The features of the geological composition of the structures have been considered, data on the criteria and indications of the mineralization have been provided, the characteristic of the ore occurrences has been given, and the forecast resources of gold and uranium have been shown. Recommendations for the continuation of the Early Proterozoic structures study, aimed at establishing of the scale of the gold-uranium mineralization and creating an ore-genetic model of its formation have been given.

CASES AND PRACTICES OF IMPLEMENTING ISOTOPIC GEOCHEMICAL METHODS IN SEARCH FOR CONSEALED URANIUM DEPOSITES

The paper dwells on the results of experimental studies on different types of uranium deposits that helped determine isotope-geochemical indicators of concealed uranium accumulation to be potentially used for exploration purposes. These include anomalies in the total alpha activity (plant bark and roots), mobile uranium, multiplicative and isotopic parameters (leached solutions from soil samples), 207Pb/206Pb ratios (geogas samples taken using charcoal collectors installed in shallow soil boreholes). Ground radiometric survey is necessary to exclude surface anomalies not associated with the ore bodies (the same results are obtained using a preliminary measurement of radon activity in charcoal collectors).

Keywords: geochemical halos, hidden uranium deposits, isotope ratios, total alpha and beta activity, plants, geogas.

EXTRACTION OF NICKEL AND COBALT FROM PRODUCTION SOLUTIONS OF HEAP LEACHING OF OXIDATED NICKEL ORES

As a method for the selective extraction of cobalt, precipitation from the production solution for leaching oxidized nickel ores (ONR) with 2-naphthol was used. Sodium nitride was introduced during the precipitation process to form strong complex compounds. Achieved 99 % extraction of cobalt in the sediment. Studies have been carried out on the precipitation of nickel with sodium hydrosulfide from solutions purified from cobalt. A sulfur-containing concentrate with a content of 29 % nickel was obtained, which, after firing at T = 1080 oC, contained 87 % NiO, 0.13 Co, 0.78 Mn and 6.3 MgO.

Keywords: oxidized nickel ores, nickel, cobalt, heap leaching, product solutions, 2-naphthol, sodium nitride, sodium hydrosulphide, precipitation.

On an example of development of mineral resources of uranium and mineral resources of strategic types of minerals is considered. It is shown that problems of reduction off green field reserve in potential uranium areas is connected with reduction of preparation of engineers and experts in uranium geology. In this regard in Tomsk national research university (TPU) and the Russian state university for geological prospecting (MGRI) together with branch and academic establishments preparation of undergraduates according to programs of uranium geology was organized.
